Reducing our Footprint

In relative terms, ADCB's operations are not energy and natural resource-intensive. Nevertheless, we consciously seek to reduce our impact on global climate change by improving efficiencies in energy and resource consumption. We actively measure our energy consumption and take a variety of measures to reduce and conserve it. Similarly, we measure and report our greenhouse gas emissions and our natural resource consumption.

Water Consumption

ADCB introduced water saver washers in 2015 across many of our buildings and branches. The installations continued in 2016 in new locations, with the net effect of further reducing water consumption by reducing the quantity of water in the taps without affecting the flow.

Electricity Consumption

ADCB has introduced several initiatives over the years in an endeavour to reduce our electricity consumption and environmental footprint. These include: 

  • Installing occupancy light sensors in office cabins to reduce energy consumption by switching off automatically when the staff occupant is away from the office. Initiated in 2015, this exercise continued in 2016 as and when offices were refurbished. 
  • Setting office temperature at 23-24 C and air conditioning chillers are controlled remotely by an energy saving service provider. During off-peak hours, chillers are switched off to maintain a minimum required temperature, which reduces power consumption and costs and the durability of the equipment. Our subsidiary ADCE ensures that environmental sustainability is managed through key professional managers who consider building orientation and exposure so as to reduce heat gain and infiltration through exposure, and are required to use low COP chiller equipment. 
  • LED lighting is now used on all new projects and, as and when existing lighting is replaced, through our facilities management department, as well as our subsidiaries. Our subsidiary ADCP saw a decrease of approximately 45% in energy costs as a result this practice in 2016. 

In 2016, we opened a new building location at Bay Gate in Dubai. As a result of our expanded premises, our consumption increased slightly in 2016 despite our expanded premises despite our otherwise proactive efforts to reduce our electricity consumption through energy efficiencies.

Waste Management

ADCB has partnered with two waste management companies in the UAE to ensure the proper treatment of unwanted materials relevant to the business lifecycle process. Our recycling programme for waste management has seen an decrease in general waste and an increase in the tonnage of paper recycled year on year in 2016. As well, our subsidiary ADCP introduced a full waste management at several of the properties under its management in 2016 while our engineering subsidiary ADCE introduced construction waste segregation for concrete and wood.
